This website is the product of cooperation between dermatologists and patients who have been diagnosed with malignant melanoma. Support has also been provided on a voluntary basis by a number of people who offered their time so that this website could become a reality. The website has been supported by Danish Dermatological Society and Fonden for Faglig Udvikling i Speciallægepraksis.
Our aim is to raise awareness of the need and importance of undergoing regular skin check-ups so that potentially malignant moles can be identified and analyzed early. If diagnosed early, malignant melanoma can almost always be treated. But if the diagnosis is in the late stages of its development then malignant melanoma is one of the most agressive cancers.
Change in the colour, shape, diameter, and borders of a mole are the key early warning signs.
Check your skin systematically. Ask a family member or a friend to help you to check the parts of the body that are difficult to examine on your own. Use a mirror and remember to check the scalp, nails and feet.
It is not possible from a simple visual examination to determine how deeply a malignant melanoma has invaded the skin. If the malignant melanoma is thicker than 1 mm there is a risk of it spreading to the body. If a mole looks suspicious it should be removed and sent for microscopic investigation.
If you suspect that one of your moles could be malignant then contact your GP or dermatologist as soon as possible.
